2002 New Zealand Marist Colts Tour
Palmerston North / Wanganui / Masterton / Wellington
Management Team : Itinerary : Team List :
The twenty-eight year tradition of providing opportunities to Club level rugby players continues with the 2002 New Zealand Marist Colts Tour. The Marist Clubs in Wellington, Hutt Valley, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton are proud to host the team this year. The policy of selecting a player from each of our Marist affiliated clubs, rather than a merit selected team, once again ensures that players at a "grass roots" level from all three NPC divisions are given an opportunity to tour with a representative team.
The concept pf the New Zealand Marist Colts tour began on 28th September 1974 with the first game held at the Petone Recreation Ground against the Wellington Second grade representative team. The New Zealand Marist Colts team won this match 11-6.The following year a tour of Nelson, Blenheim and Wellington took place. The New Zealand Marist Colts has continued each year, with last years tour being hosted in the Auckland and Northland areas.
Many players who have played for the New Zealand Marist Colts have furthered their careers and have reached national Provincial, Super 12 and International level.NZ Marist Colts who have received higher honours include Gordon Tietjens, Dion Waller, Tony Coghlan, Scott Adams and Sean McCahill.
Over the past few years the team has included an International flavour with representatives from Marist affiliated clubs in Samoa (St Josephs), Fiji ( Marist) and Australia (Brothers). As well as the rigorous demands of four rugby games within seven days, the tour includes school visits and many other cultural experiences.New Zealand Marist also has been assisted on the tour, by providing seminars on rugby development, personal growth and planning by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union.
