NZ Marist Liaison
The first two days were spent getting the team together from Marist Clubs in NZ, Marist Tonga and Brothers Club in Brisbane.
Training runs provide the coaches with an early insight into skill levels and potential combinations with the first game to be played on Sunday 12th against Greerton Marist.
Game day started with Mass at the St Mary's Church in Tauranga with the
team being welcomed by Father Gerald Boyce and introduced to the congregation.
A 2:30 kickoff and faced with a Greerton Marist team with 28 players proved a hurdle too far however this early taste of touring rugby was enjoyed by all with our hosts providing a very enjoyable dinner and after match function.
The next day (Monday 13th) started with a school visit to St Mary's of Tauranga where once Willie King was recognized by one of his former teachers, the nervousness disappeared and the guys relaxed and enjoyed the school's Kapa Haka groups welcome and were also surrounded by an impromptu autograph signing session. Then it was onto St Thomas Moore School and by bus to Whakatane to attend the newly formed Aquinas College. The day finished with a training run in the sand dues of a seaside park in Ohope.
Game day (Tuesday 14th) started with a visit to St Josephs in Whakatane where the guys took impromptu ball skill training sessions followed by another autograph session before being formally welcomed in the school assembly. A light midday training session was preparation for a 6pm kickoff that night at Tane Atua against Eastern Bay Peace Cup side and our first win of the tour 7 - 5. Thanks to Whakatane Marist for the great after game hospitality.
Wednesday 15th and it was on the bus to Rotorua, a training run, a run down the Luge course and other activities enjoyed by the guys.
Next day was game day with a 6:30pm kickoff against the Central Bay Peace Cup side. This was preceded by the obligatory early training run and followed a visit to John Paul College taking the Year 7 & 8 rugby team for their training run. The much bigger opposition with their expanded reserves bench saw us go down 22 - 5 but we never gave up trying all game with a last minute seven point making the difference between the teams look bigger than it was. A highlight after the game was Ross Eviress (NZ Sevens Manager) insider's view of professional rugby.
Friday 17th saw us on the bus to Hamilton via Te Awamutu where we visited St Patrick's School and had lunch at the Te Awamutu Marist Clubrooms before a light training run in Hamilton.
The next day and the final game against the North Harbour Marist Development Team was considered the 'Test Match' with all the guys on edge for the team announcement that morning. At 2:30 the teams took the field with NZM Colts playing into the wind but leading 10 - 7 at the break. The lead changed three times in the second spell with NZM Colts coming out on top 22 - 21 despite a last minute drop goal attempt by North Harbour Marist swinging just out to the right of the posts.
Hamilton Marist were great hosts after the game as were all the Marist Clubs who were involved in hosting the touring party. The fellowship developed throughout tour by all members of the touring party and their hosts is a testimony to the value of the tour both on and off the field.
