On behalf of the NZ Marist community, we extend our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the whānau of Eric Kenny and to our Marist RFC, Masterton community.
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved patron and true Marist legend, Eric Kenny, who passed peacefully on 18 November — just 12 days before his 99th birthday.
Eric’s connection to Marist began in 1963, and from that moment he became one of the club’s strongest pillars. He served faithfully across decades, managing senior teams, stepping into the role of Club Captain in 1976, and beginning a long-standing and influential tenure as Club President in 1977. His leadership helped shape the direction, identity, and unity of Marist Masterton during some of its most formative years.
In 1984, Eric and his beloved wife Kath were both honoured with Life Membership — a reflection of their immense dedication to the club and community. Their commitment was more than service; it became a family legacy. Eric and Kath’s children continued the tradition through coaching, managing, administration, junior rugby leadership, and hands-on mahi that strengthened the club from the inside out. The Kenny whānau name is woven deeply into the history and heart of Marist Masterton.
Eric’s impact also reached beyond the local club, recognised nationally as a Life Member of NZ Marist— a rare and significant honour reserved only for those who have given outstanding, lifelong service to the Marist movement.
Eric was not only a leader; he was a mentor, a steady presence, a storyteller, and a guardian of Marist values. His legacy will live on in every team that runs out, every volunteer who serves, and every family that finds a home within the Marist community.
